About our Lactation Consultant
The Heart Behind Double D Lactation Services
Dawna built Double D Lactation Services from a passion for equitable, compassionate care. What began as a dream to support families with skill and heart has grown into a practice rooted in functional feeding, oral rehabilitation, and unwavering dedication to each family she cares for.
A Personal Journey Into Lactation Work
Dawna Nussbaum (she/her) became an IBCLC after discovering firsthand how overwhelming and isolating breastfeeding can feel without support. When her daughter was born, what she hoped would be a smooth feeding journey quickly turned into a maze of latch struggles, pain, and navigating lip and tongue tie concerns alone.
Living in Seguin at the time, lactation help was limited, and Dawna found herself piecing together resources, troubleshooting like “Inspector Gadget,” and advocating fiercely for her baby’s feeding needs. After eventually breastfeeding her daughter for two years without professional guidance, she knew no parent should have to walk that path alone — and her passion for lactation work began.
Professional Training
& Clinical Background
While raising her daughter as a single mom, Dawna worked as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor while completing her clinical hours. She graduated with double associate degrees in May 2018 and passed the IBCLC board exam in April 2019.
Her professional experience spans multiple settings, including:
WIC
An underserved hospital environment
Private practice
These diverse roles allowed Dawna to support families with a wide variety of feeding challenges and deepen her clinical skills before opening her own practice.
Advanced Specializations & Continuing Education
In October 2023, Dawna founded Double D Lactation Services with the mission of providing accessible, compassionate, evidence-based care to families throughout South-Central Texas. She now works full time as an in-home and virtual lactation consultant, offering support for:
latch and positioning challenges
oral function concerns
pumping and flange fitting
bottle-feeding
low milk supply
return-to-work transitions
Her practice is rooted in functional feeding, oral rehabilitation, and unwavering dedication to each family she serves.
Dawna lives in San Antonio with her husband and daughter. In her downtime, she recharges with her family and enjoys reading, crocheting, video games, and going on vacation with her family.
