How to get Insurance Coverage for Lactation Care
I proudly serve families across San Antonio, Bexar County, and the surrounding areas with multiple insurance options available for lactation support. Insurance coverage depends on your plan, and each insurer processes lactation benefits differently.
UnitedHealthcare (In-Network)
If you have UnitedHealthcare, you may go ahead and book your appointment. After you complete your intake form, I will verify your benefits on my end—just like any other medical visit. No additional action is required from you.
Cigna (Wildflower)
Cigna offers a quick, 5-minute, instant approval process. Most families receive confirmation immediately, making it one of the fastest and easiest coverage pathways.
Aetna / Meritain (via The Lactation Network)
Aetna and Meritain benefits are processed through The Lactation Network (TLN). This is a self-verification process that must be completed before your appointment.
TLN confirms coverage for families nationwide, so approval can take anywhere from 24 hours to a few days, depending on urgency and their processing volume. If you need to be seen quickly (within 24–48 hours), I recommend noting “urgent” on your submission.
Policies for Pending TLN Verification
You are welcome to schedule an appointment while your TLN verification is still pending; however, your approval must be received before your visit in order for me to bill insurance.
If TLN has not processed your request in time:
Your visit will be billed at my self-pay rate at the time of service.
If you choose to cancel because verification is still pending, my cancellation policy applies.
If TLN later approves your benefits, I can usually retroactively bill insurance and reimburse your self-pay fee, minus the travel fee.
Please know I do not control TLN’s processing timeline—they verify patients from all over the country.
If Your Plan Is Not Covered
If your insurance is not listed above, or if your benefits are denied through your carrier, you can still work with me as a self-pay client. I am happy to provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement, depending on your out-of-network benefits.
Let’s talk about the Elephant in the room
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Dawna was in-network with BCBS through the first half of 2025 but has submitted to end her contract. We truly believe families should be able to use the insurance benefits they already pay for. Unfortunately, BCBS Texas has been reimbursing lactation visits at extremely low rate - often around $35 per consult (and $0 from FEP Blue) - and months of appeals have gone unanswered.
Even though BCBS considers this “meeting their requirement” to cover lactation support, it doesn’t actually support the level of care families deserve. Because of this, many IBCLCs across Texas have had to make the same difficult decision: we simply cannot remain in-network while still providing thorough, individualized care.
Why are we telling you this?
We believe in honest transparency and want you to have clear information about why this change is happening. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience. We will always advocate for accessible lactation care, and we’re happy to provide superbills and guidance to help you request reimbursement directly from your plan.
